Think back 20 years ago to your options of television viewing, if you have grown up in late 80’s and early 90’s, Doordarshan was only source of entertainment as far as TV viewing is considered. All family members andfriends would assemble in front of the TV set waiting for Chitrahaar or epic saga of Mahabharat to begin.
These are few memories which we hold dearin remembering the lost Indian Government Channel Doordarshan. The channel then was widely appreciated for its content and promoting our rich Indian culture, religion and various art forms.
The 80s were noted for shows such as Hum Log (1984), Buniyaad (1986–87) and Nukkad and comedy shows like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984).Mythological shows such as Ramayan (1987–88) and Mahabharat (1989–90) paved way for mythological and historical shows. Such was their popularity that roads would be empty when they were aired.
Crime thrillers like Karamchand (starring Pankaj Kapoor), Byomkesh Bakshi (starring Rajit Kapur), Reporter (Shekhar Suman) shows were so splendid that it ensured audience are glued to the TV screen. But if we take a moment back and reflect on the same, people watched Doordarshan because there was no other choice. It was the only channel which
broadcasted content to the masses interest.
But things changed when new private channels cropped up and Doordarshan refused to bring change in its content. These channels catered content focusing on our indian women’s life, remember Ekta Kapoors highly popular shows like Hum Paanch, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki. The viewing habit of audience changed because content provided by these private channels touched the hearts of many

And today again this change is evitable, families still gather in front of the screen to watch their favourite show or program in their small mobile devices. I am sure most of you would agree children these days are glued to smartphones, tablets other mobile devices, which enable content viewing almost anywhere. And the best part, one can watch array of programs without a cable or satellite subscription. Small streaming devices like Apple TV provide dozens of entertainment, sports, news and movie channels-including foreign channels, along with video-on- demand choices. Today the audience can record and pause their shows and view it in their convenience.
We have gone from an era where the television networks dictated what,when and how we watched, to a time where consumers are firmly in control. At present customizing the content has taken its prime importance. The TV content today is consumer driven, where the user is increasingly in control of their viewing practices and will mix and match the services they like and eliminate ones they don’t like. The viewing habit today is “we need
to see things now, in personalized way not boring content.” Can anyone imagine how will we view TV in future?I believe in near future with advancement in technology various broadcasters would build the recommendation engine which will be so finely tuned that it will show users “one or two suggestions that perfectly fit what they want to watch now.”
