Diabetes, Pregnancy & Oral health

shutterstock_2705096

The A.K.A Dental surgery clinic is operational in Rooty Hill,NSW for quite some time and now the clinic has established its new branch in Parramatta, Church Street,NSW. Talking to Dr. Rashmi Suryawanshi, Dental Surgeon, B.D.S(A.D.C) who is being into practice for 16yrs now, says “when it comes to preventing and managing diabetes or pregnancy, the last thing that probably comes to mind is your teeth and gums… but your oral health is actually an incredibly important element on your body’s ability to stay well.”

Some of the interesting aspects she shared with regards to diabetes, pregnancy and oral health is as follows-

Why do people with diabetes have a greater risk of oral health problems?

People with diabetes who have irregular blood glucose levels have a higher risk of tooth problems and gum disease than people without diabetes. This is because they have lower resistance to infection and may not heal as easily.

Poor blood glucose control leads to bacteria growth and increases the risk of infections. Dry mouth can also occur when blood glucose levels are high. Some medications for diabetes, may cause dry mouth and taste disturbance.

Also, diabetic people who smoke or even general smokers are at higher risk of gum disease and may also contribute to having a dry mouth. Hypo treatments such as sweetened fizzy drinks and lollies can lead to tooth decay.

What are the symptoms to watch for?

Bleeding from gums or gums that are loose and pull away from the teeth, a persistent discharge (pus) coming from the gums are all the signs indicating to see your dentist immediately. Sometimes with advancement of the disease, there will be no bleeding, which in normal circumstances many people tend to ignore and not pay a visit to their dentist.

Why is the management of oral health especially important for people with diabetes?

Taking care of your teeth and mouth is especially important if you have diabetes, because the condition results in a greater risk of oral infection and often slows the healing process because of minimum blood supply in that region. Seeing a dentist is a slightly different experience for diabetics and it’s important to learn as much as you can, about handling your diabetes and dental treatment and work with your dentist to avoid  any complications and maintain your oral health. Tooth- and gum-related problems aren’t the only oral health issues that you might face if you don’t treat your diabetes or see a dentist regularly.

Plus, along with getting your diabetes under control, caring for your teeth at home is an important part of your dental treatment. There is myth among people to brush the teeth, but actually we are supposed to massage the gums in circular way and use soft brush to clean the mouth and floss daily.

Tips to maintain good oral hygiene?

  • Massage your gums with your finger in circular way before brushing.
  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft tooth brush and toothpaste.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three months.
  • Floss daily.
  • Get a dental check-up and teeth cleaning at least twice a year.
  • Avoid smoking and other forms of tobacco.
  • Avoid candy and other sugary foods.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet.

What precautions a diabetic patient need to take before any dental treatment?

Handling your diabetes and dental treatment means being open with your dentist about your condition. Before undergoing surgery or another treatment that is expected to cause bleeding, one needs to get their blood sugars under control. Also before visiting your dentist it’s better to have food before. And it’s a must to visit the dentist every six months.

Is there any oral health care cover provided by the Government of Australia for diabetes patient?

There was a cover for diabetes patient, but not anymore. But there is only Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) which gives eligible children and teenagers access to up to $1,000 in benefits for dental services over two calendar years.

How important is it for pregnant women to maintain oral hygiene and why?

Pregnancy is a very exciting and a beautiful phrase in any woman’s life. There are so many changes a body undergoes and your mouth is no exception. The increase of hormone levels can leave your mouth more vulnerable to dental problems from bacteria and plaque and that’s why maintaining good oral hygiene is important not only for the mother but also for the fetus. The serious stage of gum disease, periodontitis, could cause premature birth and low birth weight.

There are also possibilities of future health problems and disabilities for unborn babies. Cerebral palsy and mental retardation are some of the likely health problems. It is not uncommon for expecting mothers to have gum infection. Nearly 50 percent of pregnant women experience pregnancy gingivitis, which usually occurs during the first trimester due to hormonal changes in the body. Symptoms of pregnancy gingivitis are usually bleeding, swollen, red and tender gums.

The best way to avoid these complications is for women to go visit their dentist at the beginning of their pregnancy. Another way to stay healthy is by practicing good oral hygiene.

Morning Sickness and its effect?

Another concern for some expectant mothers who may suffer from regular morning sickness or gastric reflux is the erosion of tooth enamel. The increased amount of acid in the mouth can cause havoc on your teeth. To help counter this, you can neutralize the acid present in your mouth by rinsing with a teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in water. Do this before brushing your teeth to minimize erosion.

What about other regular dental work during pregnancy?

Dental work while pregnant, such as cavity fillings and crowns, should be treated to reduce the chance of infection. If dental work is done during pregnancy, the second trimester is ideal. Once you reach the third trimester, it may be very difficult to lie on your back for an extended period of time.

The safest course of action is to postpone all unnecessary dental work until after the birth.

What about x-rays used in dental work during pregnancy?

Routine x-rays, typically taken during annual exams, can usually be postponed until after the birth. X-rays are necessary to perform many dental procedures, especially emergencies. According to the Australian Dental Association (ADA) having dental X-rays during your pregnancy is considered safe with appropriate shielding.

Change in TV viewing habit

mahabhart

Think back 20 years ago to your options of television viewing, if you have grown up in late 80’s and early 90’s, Doordarshan was only source of entertainment as far as TV viewing is considered. All family members andfriends would assemble in front of the TV set waiting for Chitrahaar or epic saga of Mahabharat to begin.

These are few memories which we hold dearin remembering the lost Indian Government Channel Doordarshan. The channel then was widely appreciated for its content and promoting our rich Indian culture, religion and various art forms.

The 80s were noted for shows such as Hum Log (1984), Buniyaad (1986–87) and Nukkad and comedy shows like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984).Mythological shows such as Ramayan (1987–88) and Mahabharat (1989–90) paved way for mythological and historical shows. Such was their popularity that roads would be empty when they were aired.

Crime thrillers like Karamchand (starring Pankaj Kapoor), Byomkesh Bakshi (starring Rajit Kapur), Reporter (Shekhar Suman) shows were so splendid that it ensured audience are glued to the TV screen. But if we take a moment back and reflect on the same, people watched Doordarshan because there was no other choice. It was the only channel which
broadcasted content to the masses interest.

But things changed when new private channels cropped up and Doordarshan refused to bring change in its content. These channels catered content focusing on our indian women’s life, remember Ekta Kapoors highly popular shows like Hum Paanch, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki. The viewing habit of audience changed because content provided by these private channels touched the hearts of many
Indians. People wanted content were they can relate themselves and their
life.

And today again this change is evitable, families still gather in front of the screen to watch their favourite show or program in their small mobile devices. I am sure most of you would agree children these days are glued to smartphones, tablets other mobile devices, which enable content viewing almost anywhere. And the best part, one can watch array of programs without a cable or satellite subscription. Small streaming devices like Apple TV provide dozens of entertainment, sports, news and movie channels-including foreign channels, along with video-on- demand choices. Today the audience can record and pause their shows and view it in their convenience.

We have gone from an era where the television networks dictated what, when and how we watched, to a time where consumers are firmly in control. At present customizing the content has taken its prime importance. The TV content today is consumer driven, where the user is increasingly in control of their viewing practices and will mix and match the services they like and eliminate ones they don’t like. The viewing habit today is “we need
to see things now, in personalized way not boring content.” Can anyone imagine how will we view TV in future?I believe in near future with advancement in technology various broadcasters would build the recommendation engine which will be so finely tuned that it will show users “one or two suggestions that perfectly fit what they want to watch now.”

BEING TOO SWEET IS CHALLENGING!!!

But not when you have Sweet Buddy’s !!!

block chocolate chased by human brain
How to resist temptation? Block chocolate chased by human brain.

Let me tell you guys I’m very sweet and a private person; sweetness is not just in my personality but I carry it in my blood too. Any guess…………… I’m diabetic. I was bit hesitant to write this post. Diabetes though now a common thing, still many people who are diabetic don’t speak of it openly. I’m writing this post for all my sweet friends and what all I had to go through, to control it.

I was 19yrs when I accidentally found how sweet I’m. Honestly, I did not care nor did I realize why my mom is so worried. I had to tell you being sweet caused me my sleep; I was forced to get up early, have a Methi drink in empty stomach; God knows how much I hate it and then go for walk. I was having the urge to kill the doctor for it.

cake

Can anyone tell me how someone can resist themselves from not having sweets in wedding or any occasion? Come on our Indian weddings and festivals are all about sweets. Can you imagine how it feels like when everyone is enjoying sweets and all you can do is watch them eat. And when someone asks you why you are not having you reply, I’m on diet. Highly frustrating. I am sure most of you can relate to me. One thing followed the other and then from Methi drinks it went to Bittergourd and so on. But what no one understood then was my mindset.

Why was it so challenging for me then? Simple, change in lifestyle is not easy for anyone, and for someone like me who is a lazy bone it’s tough. I’m not fitness freak nor do I love working out, be it anything like walking, jogging etc. I love food and sweets I go crazy for them and imagine the restriction on it when you’re young. Result, I lost self-motivation and interest in controlling it.

Then two heroines walked into my life during my graduation days, my so called not so sweet buddies Rajshree and Shriya…wondering why I called them like that; don’t worry “I was just joking”. They are my kick ass buddies and the reason that I could control my sugar. They saw to that I do burn calories, they mercilessly made me climb stairs while they took  lift, mostly we tried walking where ever possible, they  kept an eye on what I eat in canteen and even threatened the poor canteen fellow to keep chocolates away from me. At times I took my frustration on them ,because it felt like a hell compulsion which I hated but they handled my mood swings and anger well. After the graduation when we separated that’s when I realized my sugars were in control because of them. They made working out fun. I did not even realize how time went by and I could not even thank them. So girls if you’re reading this article… thank you.

Everyone of us have someone in our family or friends who’re diabetic, I request all of you to try understand them and slowly make them understand, why they have to do certain things even if they don’t like to do it or if they are lazy like me,the bottom line for we diabetic people is “Its must for survival”, so excuses…. just exercising and keeping an eye in diet won’t do. Mental satisfaction plays a major role, so  find a sweet buddy if don’t have one,if you do enjoy the fun.

Keep motivating them to workout. A working buddy is the best medicine for sweet people; all sweet people need some kick-ass friends, who would be willing to nib your butt when you feel lazy to work out.

It took me 4yrs to realize the seriousness of being sweet. It’s been with me like my shadow in all my ups and downs; though mostly I have fallen sick because of it only. But now I have a hold of it. I mean my sugars are in control now and I’m willingly working towards it. Credit for this goes to my husband as well. He inspires me to workout and he thoroughly monitors my diet as well. The art of mind controlling is not easy it comes with dedication and practice, but with the support of our loved ones, we can overcome anything. I’m trying to control my mind from eating sweets, my struggles is still on.

LOVE TALES

cinderella
                     CINDERELLA

Like every girl in her childhood, I too dreamt of having a ‘fairy tale love’. The kind of perfect love which they usually show in movies where a charming prince walks into a girl’s life from absolutely nowhere. Where, he treats his girl no less than a princess. This kind of fairy tale love every girl, may not have lived, but definitely dreamt of.

But when you gradually transform from a girl into a woman, you eventually realized that whatever they show in movies is exactly opposite to how you had envisioned your tale. Fact is, real life is a bit too realistic and these fairy tale moments are too good to be true.

Let’s see which tale you like a lot-

Fairy Tale Love (FTL): A warm cozy morning with your partner lying on your side. Cuddling with you; caressing your face. And then waking you up with lots of love while the early morning sunlight plays on your body (hold your imagination, though I like were its going…. But that’s how I see it in any romantic films).

Reality Check: But on the other hand, a usual morning will be like this: He is wrapped up in the bed sheets, hanging on the corner of the bed. Snoring! Sleeping on the pillow which is filled with his drool, with you yelling at him for watching soccer or cricket till late hours and asking him to wake up and get ready for the office. Isn’t it?

Fairy Tale Love (FTL): You wish to fall asleep on his shoulder during a ride or film, and just doze off hearing the rhythm of his heartbeat.

Reality Check: Sorry to disappoint you because he is usually too busy playing games in his phone or watching TV than to offer you a shoulder to sleep on or the destination arrives too quickly, before you fall asleep!

Fairy Tale Love (FTL): A typical Bollywood masala scene where the guy takes his girl out on a shopping spree. Guy starts getting cranky and then suddenly the girl comes out of the changing room, suddenly taking his grasp out by looking like an angel. Bang! Guy’s jaw drops. And then he thinks how lucky he is to have such a beautiful woman in his life is.

Reality Check: Frankly speaking, I have never seen a guy doing this for his lady in real life. Actually, the fact is that most of the men do not enjoy shopping as much as women do. For them, shopping is a horribly eccentric and bizarre activity. The very idea of taking their women out on a shopping spree pisses them off. And if somehow they do take you out, they prefer to pick the first dress you try on, without further ado or choose a dress of his choice.

Fairy Tale Love (FTL): This one is my favorite because I always dreamt of cooking food or washing dishes together with my partner. And he would get bed tea and breakfast in morning for me everyday.

Reality Check- This one hit me so hard, that I am warning you all; don’t you even dare to dream of getting a bed tea and breakfast from him that too early morning. Things like this hardly happen in real life. Forget it he will enter kitchen only to grab some food not to cook.

I think it’s enough; you have understood what I am trying to say. So all beautiful ladies; wake up stop expecting too much. But the love story that you have built with your partner in reality, with expecting things as it is, it’s in itself a tale. All love stories need not be perfect, but the journey of making one’s story is.

Weight Issues!!

1377930373WeightLossHomeopathy.jpg

I was just browsing the internet when I read an article about Urban India is getting weight conscious and women are more determined to lose weight to enhance their beauty.  And it made me wonder why so many women are conscious to lose weight. What is the big deal of losing weight? And, what has that got to do with beauty? I was never conscious of losing weight in my young age, and even now I’m not. But yes today, I’m conscious of what I eat and how much and not with the intention to lose weight but to be healthy.

So I asked myself; why people who are slim and fit also fuss over their weight? Then I recalled the discussion I had with my friend, she said I want to lose weight; to fit in my favorite dress before her sister’s wedding and look beautiful. But I was wondering she was already having a wonderful body with no side angles hanging anywhere; so what make her feel such a way. Then I browsed through the internet again; and found the reason why many women feel such a way.

1) All want to Look Good: This was the primary factor for people in the younger age group (under 35) and the top reason among women (above 35).
2) Improve Confidence: Surprisingly, improving confidence was associated with beauty and weight loss among women. My sister in law after giving birth wanted to lose weight in order to get back her husband’s attention to her, this she said will give her confidence to carry on.

3) Better Health: This was most common among those who were obese or with health issues.

So whoever is reading this article, do let me know is losing weight associated with beauty? For me beauty and weight loss are two different things. Because I feel some fat women also look beautiful and weight loss should be done keeping health in mind not beauty; as health is wealth. And good looks just fade away over the period of time. Everyone cannot look like Aishwarya Rai. For me, beauty is more to do with an individual’s psyche. Just as Plato quoted “Beauty lies in the eye of beholder”, I feel it stays true to this that, an Individual perseverance of beauty is different for all.

9 Annoying Online Habits

la-la-fi-facebook-paper-jpg-20140204

To everyone reading it’s my personal opinion nothing against anyone. I have listed online habits that I find it annoying. Also, your views can differ from mine. So, you can add in more or better tell me your views on what online habits annoy you lot.

Take a look at mine below-

1)  Hash Tag Everything #-

People on Facebook, Twitter and even while texting few decide to add unnecessary hashtags to their messages. Sure, hash tagging a show, city or trending topic makes sense, but adding”#” in front of every sentence is #just kind of annoying. PRO TIP- Please doesn’t overdo it.

2) Selfies For Every Occasion-

Interestingly, I’m always surrounded by selfie obsessed people and I hate it to the core. Not that I don’t take selfies but I’m certainly not addicted. I’m sure all can relate to this, individuals who take anywhere between 5 to 20 photos of themselves, often during the same day or hour.

3) Checking Your Emails Often-

Many of us do this and we may not even be aware of it. I fall into this category, as I always feel my boss will mail or reply, so my hand automatically goes to see & check if I have received mails from him. One study showed that 40 percent of us checked our inboxes at least 6 to 20 times a day. Note- I have not counted how much I do.

4) Unnecessary Status Updates-

These people keep updating status after every 2 or 3 hour. I call these people blood suckers why, because they update status like feel terrible or heartbroken etc. But certainly I am not interested to know how you feel every hour. Instead put status that adds value or that truly defines you

5) Using Too Much Instagram Space-

These are people who post 4 t 8 photos on Instagram at once from the same event. Unless you’re a news organization or you run that company, chances are people won’t appreciate you clogging up their feeds with repetitive posts.

6) Liking Sprees-

These are people on Facebook and Instagram who decide to like 20 things at once and take over your notification feed. Everybody loves having likes in their post, but it’s certainly not necessary every time the same person post something by habit you have to like it or your been too lazy to comment, so what better than to like

7) Too Many Games-

My husband fits in this category. First it was Farmville and now it’s probably Candy Crush. Not only are game invitations annoying, but if you’re downloading them on your phone, they can also take up a lot of space. Like its eating away my time to spend with him.PRO TIP: De-clutter your apps once in a while. If you’re not using or playing a game in particular, delete.

8) One-Line Respondents-

People who respond with “lol,” “OK,” or “cool,” after you spend 10 minutes crafting a long and personalized text or email. An honorable mention goes out to those of you who text one-liners at the last minute before cancelling  an event or showing up late. PRO TIP: If you’re too busy to answer, just say it. It’s better to be honest than leave people hanging with a thoughtless response

9) Checking In… All The Time-

For those who check in on Facebook and other social media platforms to notify the world where they are. Not only is it annoying to keep on “check in” every time like I’m at friend’s house or at the library, letting the world know that  you are not at home can also lead to home invasions. PRO TIP: Privacy has become an issue for many social media sites, so be careful how often and where you check in.
